The Skipper

Glenn has been sailing professionally for 15 years. By combining a degree in Engineering from Cornell University with his numerous travels and ocean crossings, (2 Atlantic crossings with Sylvia, 4 more on other yachts), Glenn brings a unique perspective to sailing.

Since his first introduction in Discovery Yachts in 2009, he has become an absolute expert. For years, Glenn was Sylvia’s full-time skipper in the Caribbean. With his knowledge and care, he kept her gleaming and pristine.

It does not matter if you are experienced or not, Glenn gives customized training on any subject you are interested in. He does this in an enthusiastic, patient way and has a lot of tips and tricks to share.

You’ll need your notebook as you will want to write it all down! Yachts of this type are loaded with equipment. A lot of handling of this equipment is not covered by conventional sailing courses. This is your chance to get some insight, especially if you are thinking about maybe buying a yacht yourself…

Docking 101

Discussion of spring line use, prop wash, and bow thruster. Considerations on windage and tides. Short handed docking.

Sailing 101

Sails in and out, trimming and reefing for upwind and downwind.

Cruising 101

Anchoring and mooring balls. Dinghy launch, use and retrieval. Provisioning, power management, and water conservation. Shift systems and best practices on arrangements on board.

Delivery and overnight preparations

Coastal and offshore. Weather routing considerations.

Maintenance and Repairs 101

Common engine and generator servicing. Watermaker servicing and pickling. Washing and waxing. Cleaning products. Haul outs and storage. Tools and spares

Purchase considerations

Differences between blue water yachts (Oyster, Discovery, Amel, Hallberg-Rassy …). Design considerations (hull shape, sail plan, engine …). Technical inspection and expected wear. Advice on test sailing.
